  • As I Lay Dying Interview: Jordan Mancino is Spicing Up a New Generation of Metal--with Punk Sugar

    Author: Tricia Weight
In 2007, As I Lay Dying rose with meteoric vengeance from the densely packed California metalcore scene with the release of An Ocean Before Us which debuted at #8 on Billboard's Top 200 and at #1 on the Top Rock chart.

It was an amazing year of breakthroughs for the San Diego band who had been honing their craft since their formation in 2001. They won the 'Ultimate Metal God' award from MTV and received a Grammy nomination for the song, "Nothing Left."

They continued to break ground playing major festivals across America and Europe including Wacken, Soundwave and Ozzfest and releasing albums that featured a mix of originals, previously recorded material and cover nods to the bands who were responsible in influencing their thrash tinged metalcore sound.

For their up-coming album, Awakened, set for release September 25, 2012 on Metalblade records, As I Lay Dying brought in veteran punk producer Bill Stevenson. Backstage at Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival 2012, I talked to drummer and founding member Jordan Mancino about the new generation of metal bands and how they're bringing the genre full circle, harkening back to the original roots of heavy, aggressive music like hardcore and heavy metal, as well as the new direction As I Lay Dying is taking on the forth-coming, Awakened.

AS I LAY DYING Live Interview - Jordan Mancino - Mayhem Festival

With this new record we wanted to change things up a bit I think. Our relationship, the recording process, the writing process, picking a producer: pretty much everything under the sun. You know, we've been a band for over ten years now and I think we're at that point where it's time to change things up--not necessarily like... we're unhappy with where we are, because that's definitely not the case. But just trying to look for something to spice things up a bit.

I guess for starters, we were looking at different producers for this record and tryng to find someone that was a little 'outside of the box' for our genre and for us.

So it was a little bit of a tedious process because there are a lot of bands that, at this point in their career, they decide to work with someone 'outside of the box' and find someone too far outside and kind of shoot themselves in the foot. They get someone that doesn't even really understand where they came from and just how aggressive music really works.

As I Lay Dying - Cauterize (Official Lyric Video), from the upcoming album Awakened

One of the first people that we actually talked to was Bill Stevenson who is a very renowned punk rock producer, he's obviously the drummer from The Descendents, Black Flag, so there's a lot of history there.

Plus us being from San Diego, which had a huge punk scene and still does. We were very immersed in that growing up, so you know, it was cool for us to just be on the phone with him. But just talking with him, hearing his take on the past couple of records that we made and how he saw us, what he thought we weren't necessarily tapping into creatively; new areas that we could explore.

We just felt like it was a perfect fit. He was far enough removed from the metal scene and from metal producing, but he still understood how aggressive music really works. Obviously punk and metal and hardcore have a very similar type of, I guess, angst.

It seems like retro is the "new metal." In a way it's kind of bringing everything back around to where Judas Priest and Scorpions and Iron maiden and Slayer and Anthrax, all those bands, where they had their roots. It brings everybody back to the root.

Definitely. I think there really has been a resurgence in younger fans listening to some of the older bands that have been around for a while. Because bands like, using us as an example, pull inspiration from these bands and kids will go see a show, they'll like our band and once they start digging more they realize that, yeah, we're fans of Judas Priest or Slayer, Motorhead, Testament, all these bands.

Then they start listening to the older bands because they want to see where we derive our inspiration from. Which I think is, like you said, sort of making things come full circle and inspiring a younger generation of thrash metal. And I think it's cool. I think that's awesome.

  • Gorillaz: DoYaThing with Andre 3000 and James Murphy

    Author: Tricia Weight

gorillaz_converseFor the latest collaboration in the "Three Artists. One Song." campaign Converse has teamed Gorillaz with OutKast's Andre 3000 and LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy on Gorillaz latest single, "DoYaThing," which is available for listening or free download at Converse.com/doyathing.

"DoYaThing," is an absolutely amazing song. Undeniable proof that after 10 years of making music, Gorillaz is still packing heat and their ability to lay down ass-spanking, funky, hip hop/pop music has only grown over the years.

In conjunction with the release of "DoYaThing," Gorillaz' Jamie Hewlett has also designed a kickin' new shoe line for Converse.

gorillaz_limited_edition_converseAs my profile says, I have a shoe/ boot fetish--one look at the limited edition Chuck Taylor Gorillaz Collection and it was done. Seriously. Stick a fork in it. These shoes will be mine.

Gorillaz' Damon Albarn has been working on an extended version of "DoYaThing" for a later release (that 13 minute -->explicit<-- version was leaked and hit Youtube today) while Hewlett has been focusing his creative juices on a new video that will capture the funky, wild spirit expressed in both the shoe line and the new song.

Gorillaz celebrated their 10th anniversary with the release of a new compilation album, The Singles Collection: 2001 - 2011, and on February 21st they were honored at the Brit Awards in their native UK with the Outstanding Music Contribution Award. Most important of all, Damon Albarn has also been working in collaboration with his other highly successful Britpop band, Blur, on new material and--in what is sure to become a megaton explosion of pop/punk/funk fusion--Gorillaz are looking at a return to the studio for a new album as well.

So pop over to the Converse website, check out the cool shoes and download the new hot tune, the download button is below the embedded player and it is red. You can't miss it. Gorillaz have also left a message that should make you feel right at home.

"Take a listen and, while you’re at it, get your mucky paws on a Chuck Taylor Gorillaz sneaker, part of the new limited edition collection featuring artwork by Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett. Enjoy the tasty bits, kiddie-winkles."

  • KidTunes: Putumayo Kids Presents Instrumental Dreamland

    Author: Bob Etier

At the dinner party, one of my guests—referring to the “mood” music—turns from dessert and asks, “Is that ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star?” I smile and nod. Seven tracks later, a guest asks, “Why are we listening to ‘Brahms’ Lullaby’?,” to which I sweetly reply, “Because it’s time for you to go home.”

The “Truth in Reviewing Act,” to which all reviewers subscribe, forces me to admit that the conversation above never took place. Nor did the dinner party—since relocating to the mountains, there have been no dinner parties. I can fantasize, can’t I? The truth is that I've got a new album that makes wonderful background music for whatever.

February 28, 2012, marks the release of Putumayo Kids Presents Instrumental Dreamland, a collection of soothing-not-boring music designed “for relaxation and bedtime.” While the lovely acoustic instrumentals on the album are relaxing, I hesitate to recommend the album for children only. It provides an enjoyable listening experience to people of all ages. However, the inclusion of the two earlier-mentioned tracks does brand it as KidTunes.

The opening track on Instrumental Dreamland is a delightfully simple rendition of “What a Wonderful World,” performed by American musician Damien Erwin. This collection of world music includes selections from Brazil (“O Filho Que Eu Quero Ter,” Reginaldo Frazatto, Jr.), Japan (“Lullaby,” Masahiro Nitta), Mali (“Kouyate,” Balla Tounkara), and Ireland (“The Lark,” Seamus Egan), as well as several others from the United States: “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” Michael Allen Harrison; “Bressay Lullaby/Don Oiche,” Sue Richards and Maggie Sansone; “Pupu Hinuhinu (Shiny Shell Lullaby),” Keola Beamer; “Hand in Hand,” Tony Ellis, “Honu’s Dream,” Kohala and Jake Shimabukuro; and “Brahms’ Lullaby,” Victor Johnson

Instrumental Dreamland is an excellent choice for naptime and bedtime, providing a calming soundtrack to gently lull little ones to sleep, but is also appropriate for mealtime, quiet time, and all the times when our kids (or we) don’t need to be stimulated or overstimulated. As much as we enjoy rockin’ KidTunes, there are times when they just aren’t appropriate.

Instrumental Dreamland is the sixth album in the Dreamland series, and the first all-instrumental collection. The music selected, according to Putumayo founder Dan Storper, was “chosen for [its] calming effect and appeal to children and adults alike.” Do you think Mr. Storper would be surprised to learn it also works for overly-anxious canines, too?
